An animal that has been kept as a pet should never be released to the wild.

Why?  First of all, it is illegal. But it is also cruel. Some animals, such as cats, can survive without assistance, but their lives are often short and difficult.  For an animal such as a python, or an iguana, Utah's cold temperatures are sure to be lethal.  Even species that could survive our climate would be lost, and likely starve to death before being able to establish a home range.  Unfortunately, many a persons good intentions have resulted in difficult circumstances for the animal.

What can you do?  If you have a pet reptile that you can no longer keep, there are several alternatives.  Some pet stores that keep reptiles may accept the animal.  A few may even offer in-store credit.  Or, you can try to sell it yourself just as you would offer a dog or cat for sale in the classifieds.  If those two avenues are not an option, you should contact a rescue facility.

Many animal shelters are not equipped to deal with reptiles, and cannot provide the heat and caging needs specific to reptiles.  Fortunately, Salt Lake City has a rescue facility that specializes in reptiles - Reptile Rescue Inc.

Jim Dix operates Reptile Rescue Inc., and is a great friend to reptiles (and other critters). If you have a pet reptile that can no longer be cared for, give Jim a call or drop him an e-mail.

Please educate others that releasing a pet, be it a reptile or otherwise, is not a good idea!
